The question was ‘What is the one thing that churches should never be without?’ My friend chose BIBLES as their answer and that was my first choice too. But sadly, BIBLES was not the number one answer. Then I chose PEWS because my answer had to be different. And once again I had chosen wrongly. PEWS is not the number one thing that churches should never be without.

That got me to thinking. God the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are people a church can’t be without, but I think the question is talking more about things of earthly origin.

Love is something that a church should never be without. Without love a church wouldn’t survive very long. But this still wasn’t the number one answer.

Money, every church needs money. But a church can survive without money just as Jesus did.

Some other things a church needs, a choir, parking spaces, electricity, running water, class rooms, sanctuary, gym. But, when you think about it, these things are wants not needs.

When the number one answer was shown my heart sank. One, if not of the most, important thing that a church needs is often over looked, unappreciated and taken for granted.

Once again, we are talking about things on earth. The most important thing is a PASTOR. Not a preacher but a pastor. Anyone can preach. As a matter of fact Christ commanded us all to go and preach the gospel.

A PASTOR helps hold things together in a local community of believers. He gives the church direction. A PASTOR helps us keep close to God. A PASTOR does so many things for the church. But he is often taken for granted.
